How To Move A Mattress The Right Way - A Simple Guide

November 21, 2017

It’s easy to forget how difficult moving a mattress can be, especially when you’re all cozy in bed. How can something so comfortable be such a pain? Mattresses are often large and unwieldy—too firm when you need them to be flexible and too flimsy when you need them to stay firm. Moreover, improper handling can easily damage some mattresses or your other furniture. Here’s a quick guide on how to move a mattress.

Roof Of Your Car vs. Moving Truck

One of the first things to decide when planning how to move a mattress is how you’ll transport it to its new destination. While a moving truck is ideal, you can also secure your mattress to the roof of your car. If you’re using your car, put a blanket or a tarp between the roof and the bottom of your mattress. Or, better yet, invest in a mattress case for even better protection. Drive carefully and consider keeping your hazard lights on so other drivers will know not to follow too closely.

If you’re using a moving truck, you’ll still want to use a protective covering for your mattress. Aside from protecting the mattress itself, consider how you’ll fit it in with your other furniture. Ideally, you should position your mattress and box spring along the sides of the truck with the rest of your heaviest furniture arranged in an “I” pattern in the middle. Symmetry and even weight distribution will make everything easier!

How To Carry A Mattress

Just because you’ve chosen to move your furniture yourself doesn’t mean you should do it by yourself. Anyone who’s ever moved a mattress—or any other large furniture—will advise you against going at it alone. The tricky part about carrying a mattress in particular is that you’ll need to lift it, hold it, and keep it more or less still. So, assuming you have another set of hands to help, here are a few tips for how to move a mattress with a friend:

Turn the mattress on its side, long edge parallel to the ground, then…

  • First method – Each person uses one hand to grab under a bottom corner while the other hand holds and secures the upper corner. Alternatively, you might want to use two hands under the bottom corner while using your shoulder to keep the upper corner from shifting.
  • Second method – See if your mattress has handles, and position yourself accordingly. Or, you can use a handy tool called a forearm forklift—a flat belt used to lift the bottom edge of the mattress, giving you a better range of motion, a better grip, and more control.

Other Methods Of Maneuvering

Moving your mattress will require you to maneuver it in and out of hallways, your house, and your vehicle. That can be difficult. You may scuff up walls, damage other items in your home, or even harm your mattress if you’re not careful. Here are a few additional tips on how to move a mattress efficiently:

  • Slide your mattress whenever possible. Whether it’s across the floor or up the stairs, sliding can help to alleviate some of the work of moving a heavy mattress. Just make sure to consider your surfaces. You don’t want to damage the mattress fabric or your floor/carpet.
  • Consider using a moving cloth. This can help you slide your mattress safely. A large towel or an old blanket can also do the trick.
  • Use a dolly. While a dolly will have its own advantages and disadvantages—and may be better suited for some mattress sizes over others—it can help you maneuver your mattress more easily.
