How To Fit A Big Couch Through A Small Door

January 17, 2018

It can be a puzzle for sure, and often not a satisfying one. When trying to figure how to fit a big couch through a small door, you might be at a total loss for where to start. You may have tried everything short of removing the door from the hinges. All too often, the door is only a part of the equation, especially when you live in an apartment building with stairs, elevators, and multiple doorways. Not to fear! Today we’re covering the basics of getting your couch where it belongs: into your home!

Simple Tips To Get Started

First, let’s assume you’re moving your couch by yourself. (Well, not by yourself, of course—be sure to have some help). Perhaps you’ve already considered hiring a moving company and have compared a few estimates. You’ve opted to save some money. Good. We’re on the same page. Here are a few tips to consider as you get started with figuring out how to fit a big couch through a small door:

Make Sure To Measure

Measure your doorways first. This includes any doorways you’ll have to navigate while moving the couch. And be sure to factor in the door itself, not just the opening. Many doors stick out into the doorway about an inch or so. Next, measure your couch for length, width, and height. Be sure to factor in the legs and cushions if they can’t be removed (more on that later). While it may take a little bit of time, having precise measurements is the easiest way to avoid hassle down the line.

Bonus tip: Be sure to measure any other spaces you’ll need to navigate, such as your moving truck, apartment stairwells, and elevators. After all, getting your couch through the door is just the first step.

Remove Cushions And Legs

This is an easy way to cut down on your couch’s dimensions. For some couches, both the seat and back cushions are removable. For others, only some cushions can be removed. Whether you can remove your couch legs will depend on your specific piece as well. Some can be twisted off, while others may require tools. Don’t risk breaking your couch legs if you’re not sure they can be removed easily.

Bonus tip: As a last resort, you’ll want to know what else you can disassemble, from the doorway to the entire couch itself. Some couches, such as futons or ready-to-assemble furniture, can be completely disassembled. Others won’t be as straightforward.

The Art of Angling

Now that we’ve covered the basics, it’s time for some dancing lessons. Moving a couch often requires a careful ballet of shimmying and other maneuvers. You can come up with various possibilities with your moving partner(s), but these are a few of the basic maneuvers you’ll want to try first to get a couch through a door.

Stand The Couch On Its Side

If the couch is too wide or the back is too high, try standing the couch on its armrest (in an L shape) to move it through the door. Of course, this strategy will only work if the height of the doorway is greater than the length of the couch.

Try this strategy on multiple sides—with the back of your couch toward the floor, with the front of your couch toward the floor, and with the center of the couch at an angle (creating a  ^  or V shape). If needed, you can always adjust your angles while moving your couch.

Bonus Tip: If all else fails, try entering at a diagonal angle, making small adjustments as you move forward.
